Zappa steps out from behind the satire here and makes the guitar and the studio itself do the talking, proving he could build a jazz-rock record as fierce as anything his freak-out reputation promised.
"Peaches En Regalia" opens with a fanfare stacked from overdubbed reeds and keyboards, an instrumental so tightly arranged it sounds composed on staff paper rather than jammed. Then "Willie The Pimp" hands the mic to Captain Beefheart for one gravel-throated verse before Zappa's guitar takes over for nine minutes of blues that refuses to end where a blues should. The trick of the album is how it swings between that raw electric grind and the delicate clockwork of "Little Umbrellas," never letting either mode soften the other. It's the sound of a bandleader who wanted precision and filth in the same room, and got both.
