Orbital
The Hartnoll brothers built techno you could think to, proving that a synthesizer arpeggio and a stolen choir could carry as much feeling as any guitar band Kent ever produced.
"Belfast" is the argument in miniature: a wordless female vocal sample floats over a slow, patient beat until the track feels less like dance music than a prayer left running overnight. Where most rave records of the era chased the next drop, Orbital let "Chime" unfold its little climbing figure with almost stubborn calm, trusting repetition to do the emotional work. The brothers came out of home-taping and small clubs, not studios full of session players, and that DIY patience is audible in every unhurried build. What they made here is proof that electronic music could be intimate without going quiet.
