On a Mission
Katy B
Katy B took the strobe-lit bass of London's pirate-radio scene — funky, garage, dubstep — and sang over it like a girl texting from the smoking area, making the underground sound like the biggest pop in Britain.
The trick is her flat, unbothered delivery: on "Katy on a Mission" she rides a churning half-step bassline without ever raising her voice to meet it, so the drama stays in the production while she reports the night back to you plainly. "Lights On" and "Easy Please Me" keep that same eye-level candor, women deciding who's worth their time on the dancefloor rather than swooning about it. That refusal to oversing is what let a Rinse FM crew's sound cross into daytime radio without softening the low end. Years of pop-facing club records followed her lead, but few kept the voice this human against a rig this heavy.
