Dianne Reeves spends this whole record proving that a jazz singer can strip standards down to a piano trio and lose none of the weight her big-band showcases carried.
The title track, that Billie Holiday warhorse, becomes her showpiece for restraint — she holds notes back where a lesser singer would belt, letting the swing pulse do the lifting. She treats "Skylark" like conversation rather than performance, bending phrases around the melody until the song sounds newly written. What emerges across the ten cuts is a singer trusting silence and space, betting that a small room reveals more than a spotlight ever could. By the closing "We'll Be Together Again," the intimacy feels less like a stylistic choice than the only honest way she knows to sing these songs.
