Jennifer HudsonWhy it matters
A woman who spent years being sung to on "American Idol" arrives on her debut swinging her voice like a hammer, and "Spotlight" proves she can shrink that force down to a whisper when the song asks.
The clearest evidence sits at the back of the record, where "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going" appears in its highlights version — the "Dreamgirls" showstopper that won her an Oscar, now standing beside slick radio R&B and Ludacris on "Pocketbook." That collision is the whole gamble here: a lung-powered belter learning to sit inside programmed drums and duet with Fantasia on "I'm His Only Woman" without blowing the roof off. The gospel steadiness of "You Pulled Me Through" is where the two halves finally meet, a vocal that climbs without ever sounding like it's showing off. She doesn't fully resolve the tension between competition-stage power and pop restraint, but hearing her test both is more interesting than watching her win either outright.
