Why it matters

Axel Willner built an entire album from a technique that should feel gimmicky — chopping vocal snippets into microscopic loops until they dissolve into pulsing haze — and instead made minimal techno feel like memory itself.

"Over the Ice" opens on a scrap of voice sliced so fine you can't name the source word, only feel it throb against a steady kick, and that unrecognizability is the trick: the loop stops being a sample and becomes weather. Willner keeps almost nothing else moving, so tiny shifts — a new harmonic layer surfacing in "A Paw in My Face," the slow bloom of "Everyday" — arrive like events. The title track finally lets a recognizable guitar figure through the fog, a small mercy after forty minutes of things half-remembered. It remains the clearest proof that techno's most emotional music can be made from its most mechanical parts.
