Why it matters

Recorded weeks before Ian Curtis died, Closer turns dread into architecture — cold synthesizers, cavernous drums, and a voice already speaking from somewhere the rest of us can't follow.

Martin Hannett's production is the reason it still sounds airless: he separates every instrument into its own empty room, so "Atrocity Exhibition" opens on drums that echo like something being struck in a bunker. By the time "Decades" arrives, the guitars have all but surrendered to synthesizer and Curtis's flat, drowning baritone, and the effect is less a song than a slow closing of a door. The live material tacked on here — including a stark "Twenty Four Hours" and "Love Will Tear Us Apart" — shows how much colder Hannett made the studio versions than the band was onstage. What lingers is that gap: a group playing hard against a producer who heard the ending coming.
