How I'm Feeling Now
Charli XCXWhy it matters
Made in six weeks of lockdown and released almost as fast, this is pop built in public, where the seams of the process become the point.
The abrasive, over-compressed synths on "pink diamond" sound like a party crashing through a laptop speaker, distortion cranked past the point most producers would allow. Charli turns confinement into subject matter directly — "party 4 u" aches for a crowd that can't gather, and "anthems" flatly catalogs boredom ("I'm so bored, wake up late, eat some cereal") over a beat that refuses to sit still. What makes it hold together is that the glitches and clipping aren't accidents she smoothed over later; they're kept in as evidence of how fast it was assembled. The result feels less like a finished statement than a live wire, and that unfinished nerve is exactly why it still stings.
