Why it matters

Clipping. builds rap tracks out of noise itself — feedback, static, and industrial clatter where a beat should be — and dares Daveed Diggs to rap over the void.

On "Work Work" the low end isn't a bassline but a grinding sheet of distortion, and Diggs stays locked to a hyper-articulate grid that never flinches. The trick is that the harshness never becomes a gimmick because the writing underneath is precise: "Story 2" narrates a doomed street chase in relentless second-person, forcing you into the shoes of someone about to die. "Williams Mix" borrows its name and cut-and-splice logic from a John Cage tape piece, which tells you exactly how seriously the group takes its avant-garde borrowings. What could be an art-school stunt lands instead as some of the sharpest storytelling in the decade's rap, delivered from inside a machine that sounds like it's breaking down.
