Reason to Smile
Kojey Radical
Kojey Radical's debut trades the restless art-school experiments of his EPs for something plainer and braver: a full accounting of who raised him and what it cost.
The autobiography sits closest on "Nappy," where he turns the texture of Black hair into a whole inheritance of pride and self-doubt, refusing to make it a slogan. He works in spoken-word cadences that slide into soul-flecked choruses, so "Payback" and "Gangsta" can hit hard without ever sounding like posture. What keeps the record from tipping into memoir-as-lecture is his ear for the domestic detail — the immigrant household, the pressure of being watched, the small joke that survives it. It closes as an argument that gratitude is harder-won than swagger, and worth more.
