DrakeWhy it matters
Drake spends twenty tracks turning Toronto's cold-weather loneliness into a mood board, sprawling because he can afford to and because sprawl is the point of being king of a city that never used to matter.
The real gambit is the two tracks that don't sound like the other eighteen: "One Dance" and "Controlla" import dancehall and Afrobeats and hand Drake the biggest hit of his life, a chart smash sung mostly in a borrowed cadence. That move mattered more than any confession here adio and Caribbean pop into the North American mainstream, and every rapper who later chased a summer riddim was following this map. The rest of Views leans into a chilly, self-pitying gorgeousness "Feel No Ways" gliding on that bright synth, "Weston Road Flows" flipping soul into hometown nostalgia hat grows numbing by hour's end. What lasts isn't the sulking; it's the proof that a rapper from Toronto could set the world's dance floors in motion.
