Why it matters

By 1980 Paul Weller had stripped The Jam down to spring-loaded guitar and bass that circle each other like the Beatles crossed with a nervous system, and used that tension to write the sharpest social snapshots of his career.

"That's Entertainment" is the proof: two acoustic guitars, a hummed melody, and a lyric that catalogues a working-day England of paint-stripped doors and screaming kids without ever raising its voice. "Man in the Corner Shop" pushes the same eye outward, tracing envy up and down a small chain of class resentment in three verses. The demos and alternate takes scattered through this edition show how deliberately those lines were pared back — the finished songs sound tossed off, but nothing here is accidental. Weller was learning that a whisper aimed right cuts deeper than a shout, and it changed what an angry young band could say.
