Jello Biafra's cartoon vibrato and East Bay Ray's surf-tinged tremolo turned California hardcore into satire sharp enough to draw blood, aimed at liberals and reactionaries alike.
"California über alles" imagines Governor Jerry Brown as a mellow fascist marching a hippie youth corps, and the joke curdles as the guitar picks up speed. Biafra never lets anyone off easy: "Kill the Poor" cheers the neutron bomb in the voice of a landlord who'd love the vacant real estate, and "Holiday in Cambodia" drags a smug college kid straight into Pol Pot's killing fields. Ray's guitar keeps everything tethered to melody even at breakneck tempo, so the mockery stays legible instead of dissolving into noise. That combination — reverb-drenched hooks under lyrics that spare no one — is why the record still stings where most protest music merely preens.
