By 1990 Dizzy Gillespie had spent four decades proving that bebop and Afro-Cuban rhythm were the same argument, and this big band assembled from a dozen nationalities is his closing statement on it.

"Tin Tin Deo" and "A Night in Tunisia" are his own old bones, but here they're fed through a rhythm section that treats clave as law rather than seasoning, so the horns have to lock into the drums instead of floating above them. What makes the night hold is how much room Gillespie surrenders — the trumpet chair is often just one voice among the Brazilian and Cuban players he recruited, and "Seresta / Samba for Carmen" leans on that generosity rather than on his lead. "Kush," with its deep modal drone and long swells, is the proof he wasn't coasting on nostalgia at seventy-three. The record works because the bandleader is content to conduct traffic through music he wrote before most of these players were born.
