The Goldberg Variations

A twenty-two-year-old pianist walked into a studio and made Bach's keyboard theme-and-variations sound less like a museum piece than a living argument, played with a clarity most performers thought impossible on the modern piano.

The opening Aria arrives unhurried, each voice picked out so cleanly you can follow three lines at once, and Gould's famous humming leaks in underneath like a second instrument he couldn't switch off. He treats the thirty variations as sprints and confessions by turns, driving the fast canons at tempos that seem reckless until you notice not a single note smears. When the Aria da capo returns at the end, played nearly identically to its first appearance, the effect is devastating: the same notes now carry everything that happened between them. That structural round-trip is why pianists still argue about this reading decades later, and why it turned a piece few concertgoers knew into a repertory cornerstone.
