Kneecap

Why it matters

Kneecap turn Belfast West's bilingual defiance into a party record that refuses to translate itself for anyone, rapping in Irish and English as if the choice were nobody's business but their own.

The interludes do the heavy lifting most rap skits skip — "Interlude: Making Headlines" and "Interlude: State of Ya" stitch the album into a running argument about who gets to speak, and how, before "Better Way to Live" cuts the swagger with something closer to a plea. When "I bhFiacha Linne" leans hard into the language, it isn't a novelty flourish; it's the whole point of the enterprise, a claim staked in a tongue the state spent generations trying to shrink. The drug-and-dole comedy of "I'm Flush" and "Drug Dealin Pagans" keeps the politics from curdling into lecture. Ending on "Glue Man (demo)" is the right kind of cheek — proof they'd rather leave you with a rough sketch than a tidy bow.
