Why it matters

Mr. Bungle spent a decade daring you to hate them, then made an album of sun-warmed doo-wop, surf harmony and Morricone twang that turns out to be the most tuneful thing Mike Patton ever put his name to.

"Pink Cigarette" is the proof it isn't a joke: a string-swept torch ballad about a man counting the hours until he's found dead, sung straight enough that the sweetness curdles into dread. "Retrovertigo" builds from a hushed acoustic ache into full swelling melodrama without a single wink, the kind of chorus the band's early records would have shredded on principle. What holds it together is arrangement more than aggression — vibraphone, lap steel and choirboy stacks assembled with a jeweler's care, then "Goodbye Sober Day" detonates into gamelan clatter just to remind you who made this. It's the sound of pranksters discovering they can break your heart, and choosing to.
